How have your classroom experiences prepared you for the internship? What do you wish you had learned prior to the internship?
The skills I have gained through the AOIT program have helped me in numerous ways through the course of my internship. One of the initial projects our manager had assigned for Sydney, Zoe, and I was the Social Media presentation. The Town of Cary was very keen on learning on how to integrate social media platforms into their environment; and as teenagers, we were chosen to do a presentation for the Technology Services staff. The presentation skills I've learned through AOIT were therefore a great influence in the success of creating and presenting our powerpoint.
The AOIT mock interviews however, were what I found to be the most useful in me receiving this internship. I found the "possible interview questions" section of the pre-internship application to be extremely helpful for me because I felt prepared, relaxed, and to a certain extent, excited. However, when it came to teamwork, I definitely found a huge difference in the impact our efforts have on day to day projects through this internship. In school, we're always told to be cooperative and fair with everyone. But in this internship, I actually got to experience the effects of everyone's efforts in the projects I worked on for the Town of Cary. Yes, I did take leadership quite a bit in my internship, especially for the Open Data stories, but if the other two interns were not cooperative and skilled in their own abilities, I would not have been able to finish even half of what I had done over the summer. Therefore, I really wish I had known prior to my internship, about not just what teamwork is, but also the significance of it.
